Chemex

This Sunday I will be hosting the first of many home brewing classes at the Sunset Junction shop.

We will go over brewing on the Chemex, French Press, Eva Solo, and Automatic Drip.

A sign up form will be available at the store later this afternoon.

The cost? $5

(Also, attendees will be able to purchase home brewing gear for 10% off after the class. Yay!)

Sunset Junction Street Fair

Silverlake is a special place. It’s a community in a city of transplants. It’s a neighborhood where you actually make friends with your neighbors.

One weekend a year, Silverlake hosts a huge party. A gathering of music, charity, booze and benevolence. The citizens open their doors (literally) to everyone in LA. It’s a celebration of influences an inspiration that gives a great deal of pride to those who live here. It a chance to let Silverlake’s best attributes shine with grace and modesty. And everyone in attendance responds in kind by letting down that “too cool” LA attitude. At no other time or place in Los Angeles will you see more people pumping their fists, screaming lyrics and/or playing obscene amounts of air guitar (drums for some)…

Last year, the party my wife and I threw for the Sunset Junction Street Fair was cut short by a late night visit from the Rampart division of the LAPD. Apparently, our neighbors thought we were a little overzealous with the karaoke (they were right). We might have been able to talk our way out of a ticket had my wife not been leading everyone in the living room through a jaw dropping version of “Careless Whisper” the moment they knocked on our door.

“Tonight the music seems so loud (knock, knock). I wish that we could lose this crowd (knock, knock, knock). Maybe it’s better this way (KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK)…” It was a stone cold groove. You can’t put a price on good karaoke. Sorry, I take that back. That night it cost $75.

At any rate, the party this weekend is a unique experience that embodies everything I love about Silverlake. I can’t begin to tell you all how excited I am that our store is going to be at the center of it all. The Sunset Junction Intelligentsia in the in the heart of the Silverlake is going to be an amazing place.

More this week on the Morris Day & the Time…
